Postdoc in theoretical physics

OPPORTUNITY.DETAILS OPPORTUNITY.DESCRIPTION

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Work assignments

We are looking for up to two postdocs within the field of theoretical physics at the department of Theoretical Physics at the Institution of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM). The positions are for a research project focused on computational simulations of thermal conductivity of nitrides and carbides at different thermodynamic conditions. The research is strongly coupled to experimental and industrial collaborations where experimentalist synthesize novel materials in diamond anvil cell using extreme high pressures and temperatures; while industrial hard coating alloys are manufactured and applied at high temperature and large stresses. The work tasks include advanced quantum mechanical simulations on supercomputers to explore higher order phonon-phonon interactions and phonon renormalization in different materials. To accelerate the simulations, we also expect the application of some machine learning approach.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are seeking applicants who have a doctorate in theoretical physics, computational materials science or similar. You must have several published papers in recognized international journals, with some on the topic of ab-initio calculation at high pressure and/or on calculations of thermal conductivity,  phonon-phonon interactions or phonon renormalization. Experience with programming languages is necessary, and programming in the language Python is beneficial.

Great emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities and suitability, such as the ability to work in team, collaborate with PhD students, accuracy, flexibility and speed. You should be inventive and have an independent attitude.

The workplace

You will be employed in the strong research environment of Theoretical Physics Division, in close collaboration with high-performance computing experts through National Supercomputer Center in Linköping, experimentalists at Linköping University and world leading reserach centers for high-pressure physics. The Division of Theoretical Physics carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within the Department of Physics Chemistry and Biology (IFM) at Linköping University.

More information about the activities in the Theoretical Physics Division can be found at https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/ifm/teofy
